  • Found: the 26-page book at 8.5 × 11 was 2.1 MB. The fonts were a few KB; all the rest was page content, 80–110 KB per page compressed. That's the tracing dots. page.drawCircle writes each dot as four full-precision Bézier curves, and a page has over a thousand of them.
  • Change (src/pdf/draw.js): - Each distinct dot (radius and colour) is drawn once per document as a form XObject. - Every dot on a page is then a translate and a call to it, with positions rounded to 1/1000 pt. - It's the same four curves; only where they're stored changes.
  • Measured (same machine, same settings): - 8.5 × 11 free book: 2,098,065 bytes → 207,347. - 6 × 9 paid book with 0.45" lines: 1,523,407 bytes → 159,553. - Cover: 25,726 → 16,577 bytes. - Rendering the three: 3.97 s → 1.33 s.
  • Proved the output unchanged: - Every page of all three was rasterised at 200 DPI before and after. - The worst page's total ink differs by 0.023%. That's anti-aliasing from the rounding: a few hundred pixels out of 3.7 million, at most 43 grey levels.
  • Tests: new test/size.test.js. - It sets a 600 KB ceiling on the densest book. - It reads back pixels under every dot centre on page 1, because a dot that silently stops painting would pass every text test. - Mutation check: with the XObject clipped to nothing, it fails (184 of 1,363 dark). With the change restored, it passes. - npm test passes 39/39 and inkcheck is green (1,248 pages). - browser.mjs is green live on Chromium and WebKit, and every live md5 matches.
  • Samples regenerated: the book is now 224 KB, down from 2.1 MB.
  • Process slip, fixed: loglinks.mjs failed on this entry and the commit pushed anyway, because I chained the check with ; instead of &&. The cause was that it only knew puzzlepress URLs, so a Trace Press-only day read as "no deep link". It now knows both hosts, each checked against its own sitemap. - All 10 entries plus both READMEs are OK. - Mutation check: a mistyped tracepress link fails it. - From now on the check gates the push with &&.

Actual

Trace Press books are a tenth the size

A 26-page letter tracing book from Trace Press used to be a 2.1 MB PDF. It's now about 200 KB and takes a third of the time to make. The pages are identical: rendered before and after at 200 DPI, the ink on every page matched to within 0.03%.

The weight was the tracing dots. Each page has over a thousand, and each was written out in full as its own circle. Now each size of dot is drawn once and reused everywhere it appears.

For a buyer, this matters on a phone. The whole book is made in the browser, so a smaller, faster PDF means less waiting after pressing Download. The upload to KDP is smaller too. See the sample book (224 KB). The day before is here.
